AmeriCorps VISTA Environmental Education Volunteer and Outreach Project Coordinator
Oklahomans for Responsible Water Policy (ORWP) – Clayton, OK
Position Announcement for AmeriCorps VISTA Opportunity
Deadline: December 16th, 2015
Formed in 2010, ORWP is a grassroots, non-profit organization with over 15,000 members statewide. ORWP’s youth education and adult outreach programs teach valuable lessons on the scientific and sustainable management of Oklahoma’s water resources. WaterEd is a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum for K-12, which is tailored to local needs and state education standards. Currently, the WaterEd program serves 3,000+ youth a year in the traditionally impoverished counties that comprise the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The VISTA member will alleviate poverty by creating long-term, sustainable tools to build the capacity of ORWP’s education and outreach programs.
Member Duties: The VISTA member will have two main duties: 1) Outreach, volunteer recruitment, training and management; 2) assist in the execution and revision of ORWP’s sustainability plan by developing, writing, and submitting grant proposals.
Term of Service: February 2016 – February 2017. Exact start date has not yet been determined by the VISTA program.
Program Benefits: Living allowance ($973/month), choice of Education Award ($5,730) or Service Stipend ($1,500) upon successful completion of service, healthcare, training, childcare assistance if eligible, relocation allowance (if eligible), and professional development opportunities.
*For healthcare options see http://www.vistacampus.gov/resources/vista-healthcare-options.
Other Considerations: VISTAs may have outside employment and pursue an education, as long as it does not interfere with service responsibilities and is approved by a supervisor. The living stipend provided by the VISTA program does not count as income, and will not prohibit you from receiving benefits such as food stamps.
